The Travelwallet takes part in Murder before Evensong

Reverend Richard Coles, crime writer and proud Midlander, is “delighted” that the TV adaptation of his novel Murder Before Evensong was filmed across the West Midlands. The series, based on the first of his Canon Clement Mysteries and starring Matthew Lewis, premieres at 21:00 BST on Tuesday on Channel 5. Filming took place in Bridgnorth and Worfield in Shropshire, as well as in Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Wolverhampton.

Coles said he had visited Bridgnorth several times before it was chosen as a location and always believed it would make a “fantastic town” for a drama. He praised its distinctive layout, with an upper and lower town, and described it as both pretty and unusual. He is also a supporter of independent bookshops and singled out Booka Bridgnorth as one of the reasons he enjoys visiting the area.

The town’s timber-framed buildings feature prominently throughout the series, providing multiple settings. Coles said Bridgnorth not only looks “stunning” but embodies the strong sense of community found in small towns, with its lively independent shops and local character.

Maggie Rogers, from The Travelwallet in Bridgnorth, said her shop was one of the locations used and she described the production crew being “like a SWAT team”.

Of the series, which is set in the 1980s, she said: “All these huge tall people seemed to come in here and they completely stripped anything that was current.”

However, she said the town had embraced the filming and “there was a lovely buzz around the town”.
